Canadian mutual fund and ETF assets reached new highs in April of $2.7 trillion and $817.2 billion, respectively, the Securities and Investment Management Association (SIMA) reported yesterday.

Mutual funds experienced a 12th straight month of positive net sales, totalling $2.4 billion for the month, up $100.6 billion or 4% from March. ETF net sales totalled $13.6 billion, representing a 6% rise, or increase of $46.1 billion, from March.

The main driver of growth in both mutual fund and ETF assets was a sharp market rebound from the month prior.

All ETF asset categories saw inflows in April, with equity funds seeing $9.6 billion in net purchases, followed by bond funds at $1.4 billion, balanced funds at $1.3 billion and specialty funds at $1.1 billion. Money market funds added $200 million.

Mutual funds inflows were more varied, with equity funds posting $1.6 billion in net sales, bond funds receiving $764 million and specialty funds adding $656 million. Balanced funds saw net redemptions of $349 million and money market funds posted net outflows of $299 million.
