Quebec boosts funding for research organizations

Quebec’s finance minister is continuing efforts to support research.

The government has made a practice of funding research organizations “whose work benefits the entire Quebec economy, particularly by advancing knowledge on subjects such as taxation, productivity and public policy.”

In this context, the 2026–27 budget includes $15.3 million over five years to support research organizations. The funding is allocated as follows:

• $0.9 million for the Institut du Québec.
• $6.3 million to the Centre interuniversitaire de recherche en analyse des organisations (CIRANO);
• $4.8 million for the research chair in taxation and public finance at Sherbrooke University;
• $1.8 million to the Productivity and Prosperity Centre — Walter J. Somers Foundation at HEC Montreal;
• $1.5 million for the joint “En avant math!” initiative of the Centre de recherches mathématiques at the Université de Montréal and CIRANO;
